We all feel better after a good night’s sleep, but it can be surprisingly difficult to achieve sometimes. Sleeping problems can range from having the odd bad night or being a restless sleeper to chronic insomnia. Difficulty sleeping is often caused by stress and then becomes a source of stress in itself. A downward spiral develops, in which we are so stressed about not being able to sleep it makes us less able to sleep.
Massage for sleep problems
Massage can help break the cycle, not only by leaving you more relaxed, but also because it stimulates the production of the hormone serotonin. Serotonin plays a part in healthy sleep patterns. This is because as well as having a calming effect, serotonin is essential for the production of the sleep hormone melatonin.
The “sleep well” treatment consists of a relaxing hot stone massage, with the “Sweet Dreams” essential oil blend and spa music. Face massage can also be added to the treatment. Most clients find face massage especially relaxing and many even fall asleep while it is being carried out!
For best results, have an evening appointment to leave you feeling completely relaxed for a good night’s sleep.
How the treatment helps
Hot stones
The feelings of comfort and warmth that the stones give can help to promote physical and mental relaxation. They enhance the effect massage has on activation of the parasympathetic nervous system and release of “feel good” hormones, including serotonin, which as described above, helps to promote sleep.
Sweet Dreams aromatherapy blend
The oils in the Sweet Dreams blend all have chemical components that help with relaxation:
- Lavender has a wide range of healing and calming properties.
- Cedarwood has natural sedative properties and promotes feelings of safety and tranquillity.
- Ylang ylang alleviates stress, especially when it is brought on by frustration and anger.
- Lemon verbena is rich in melatonin. Although our bodies do produce melatonin, low levels are thought to be a factor in sleep problems. Lemon verbena is also another oil that helps to alleviate stress and tension.
Relaxing music
Music helps with relaxation by lowering your heart rate and cortisol levels, promoting the release of “feel good” hormones and helping you to switch off and allow your mind and body to relax.
Face massage (optional)
The skin on our faces is extra sensitive, so is very responsive to the effects of massage. Most people find it very relaxing and often fall asleep during treatment. Not everyone likes having their face touched though, so this part of the treatment is an optional extra.
