Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils from plants to benefit health and well being. Essential oils have various health benefits, depending on which plant they come from. Unlike many alternative therapies, aromatherapy has a basis in science. It’s well established that the chemical components of the oils have beneficial properties. In fact, some oils are used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. However, as with all alternative therapies, how effective they are varies from person to person. In general though, depending on the oils used, aromatherapy massage can help to:
- Reduce tension in muscles
- Soothe aching muscles
- Promote a feeling of calm and well being
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Encourage healing of muscle damage
- Invigorate the body and mind
- Aid relaxation and sleep
- Improve skin tone and encourage healthy skin cell renewal
- Assist lymphatic drainage
- Boost the immune system

How essential oils are absorbed during aromatherapy massage
Although the name “aromatherapy” would suggest that the primary benefit of the oils is through their aroma, in fact absorption through the skin is an equally effective way of benefitting from the oils.
As oils are applied onto the skin, tiny molecules penetrate the epidermis, the outer layer of the skin, and enter the bloodstream. The lipid-soluble nature of essential oils facilitates their absorption through the skin, allowing them to reach deeper tissues and organs.
Once absorbed, the chemical constituents of essential oils interact with the body’s physiology in various ways. Certain compounds, such as linalool and limonene, exert anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, making them particularly beneficial for relieving muscle tension and promoting relaxation during massage. Others, like menthol and eucalyptol, possess cooling properties that soothe sore muscles and enhance circulation.
As well as adding the essential oils to the massage oil, during an aromatherapy massage, I also have oils in a diffuser to enhance the benefits through inhalation.
Relaxing massage with essential oils
Both aromatherapy and massage are known for their benefits to the nervous system, so the combination of the two therapies is particularly beneficial for issues such as stress, anxiety and insomnia.
