7 positive effects of massage on the skin

In addition to its therapeutic effects on muscles and the nervous system, there are also various beneficial effects of massage on the skin. Ways that massage can improve the skin include:

Circulation

Massage helps to increase blood flow to the skin, which brings oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells. This can help to improve the health and look of the skin.

Stress reduction

High-stress levels can adversely affect skin health, causing increased inflammation, breakouts, and a dull complexion. Massage promotes relaxation, lowers stress hormones like cortisol, and stimulates the release of endorphins, creating a sense of well-being.

Lymphatic drainage

Massage can help to improve lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system is responsible for removing toxins from the body and poor lymph drainage may cause a number of skin problems, including:

  • Dehydrated skin
  • Puffiness in some areas
  • Acne breakouts
  • Dull appearance
  • Eczema flare ups

Collagen production

Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body. Adequate collagen production is necessary to keep skin firm and elastic. Lack of collagen results in sagging, wrinkly skin. The pressure applied during massage activates fibroblasts—the cells that produce collagen and elastin fibres. With regular massage, the skin’s texture becomes firmer and more supple.

Exfoliation

Massage can help to exfoliate the skin by removing dead skin cells. This can leave the skin feeling smoother and looking more radiant.

Skin moisturisation

Massage not only improves skin moisturisation by applying oil to the skin, it also encourages production of the skins own moisturising oils.

Loosening fibrous bands

In the case of cellulite, regular massage can loosen up the tight fibrous bands that bind the skin to the muscle underneath, causing the fat in between to dimple.

What sort of massage should you have for skin benefits?

Hot stones massage for skin benefits

Any type of massage will benefit your skin, but different types may have slightly different effects:

Hot stones massage is good at promoting relaxation and improving circulation.

Essential oils (aromatherapy massage) can enhance the benefits of skin massage. Depending on which oils are used, there are a range of possible benefits, including skin rejuvenation, calming of inflammation, improvement to circulation and stimulation of collagen production.

Deep tissue massage is more vigorous, so can be very effective at stimulating circulation and collagen production, but is not as calming and relaxing as other types.

Face Massage is designed to improve the texture, elasticity and tone of the facial skin. It is also very relaxing and encourages the face muscles to release tension, easing lines in the face.

See Treatments & prices for more information on the different types of massage available.
