Deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage is similar in many ways to Swedish massage, but there are also differences. Swedish massage generally follows a set routine and with an emphasis on relaxation. Deep tissue massage, on the other hand, focuses on problem areas and uses deep tissue techniques to work into the muscles. Deep tissue massage can help to release tension and separate muscle fibres that have become stuck together. This relieves muscle aches and pains, together with any related symptoms. It also frees up movement and has a general stress relieving effect. If there are soft tissue injuries, then massage can promote healing by flushing the area with fresh blood.
Back massage
Our back muscles hold our bodies upright and support all our movements. Unfortunately they are prone to injury, tension, pain, and stiffness. Back pain is a common complaint, affecting millions worldwide. It can stem from various factors, including poor posture, injuries, stress, and overuse. Back massage offers a natural, non-invasive way to address these issues, providing a range of benefits. Back, shoulder and neck massage includes the whole back, from the lower back up to the muscle attachments on the base of the skull. However, the majority of people have more issues in the upper back, shoulders and neck so their treatment will focus more on these areas.
Shoulder massage
Like the upper back and neck, the shoulders are a common tension spot. We tend to react to stress and anxiety by contracting the muscles that bring our shoulders up and forwards. Other reasons why you might have tension in your shoulder muscle includes:
- Bad posture and poor movement patterns
- Repetitive movements
- Previous injury
- Being in the same position for long periods each day
- Frequent lifting and carrying, especially if this is asymmetrical, for example a bag on one shoulder or a child supported by one arm
- Sport and fitness activities

Neck massage
Neck pain is also a common problem, often caused by neck tension. As well as neck pain, symptoms of neck tension include:
- Feeling of stiffness
- Restricted neck movement (not able to look over your shoulder and/or lower your ear towards your shoulder)
- Headaches
- A tightening sensation around your head
- Muscle spasms
The neck vertebrae and the base of the skull have multiple muscle attachments and working into these as well as the muscles themselves helps to release tension and prevent headaches. Most people also find it very pleasant and relaxing. Read more about neck massage here.
Hot stones massage
Hot stones massage is carried out with basalt stones, heated in hot water. The therapist holds the stones in the palms of her hands and glides them over the client’s skin. The heat of the stones increases blood supply and helps muscles to relax. Working into muscles to release tension and knots is easier if the muscles are warm from the stones. If the client wants deeper work in some areas, this can be done with the edges of the stones or trigger point stones. Read more about hot stones massage.
Face massage
Face massage can improve your skin condition and rejuvenate your face in various ways. Its benefits include:
- Plumps the skin
- Encourages cell renewal
- Stimulates blood flow to the face, improving the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to skin cells.
- Removes dead skin cells, brightening the appearance of the skin.
- Improves skin suppleness by promoting the production of collagen.
- Improves lymphatic drainage, which can reduce puffiness and speed up removal of waste products.
- The release of tension from the face muscles eases frown and other lines. It also helps with overall relaxation and clients often have the treatment for its relaxing effects, rather than skin benefits.
- Can improve sinus drainage, leading to reduced pressure and fewer sinus headaches.
The massage includes smoothing, lifting and stimulating massage stroke patterns. As well as having beneficial effects for the skin, the treatment is very relaxing.
Aromatherapy massage
Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils from plants to benefit health and well being. Essential oils have various health benefits, depending on which plant they come from. Unlike many alternative therapies, aromatherapy has a basis in science. It’s well established that the chemical components of the oils have beneficial properties. In fact, some oils are used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. However, as with all alternative therapies, how effective they are varies from person to person. In general though, depending on the oils used, aromatherapy massage can help to:
- Reduce tension in muscles
- Soothe aching muscles
- Promote a feeling of calm and well being
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Encourage healing of muscle damage
- Invigorate the body and mind
- Aid relaxation and sleep
- Improve skin tone and encourage healthy skin cell renewal
- Assist lymphatic drainage
- Boost the immune system
